An ongoing source of competition and an opportunity to catch one of the finest specimine pike this country has to offer lies in the tale of Big Mary. Mary a 46lb pike has been caught on two occasions at the oaks. First caught in March 2005 Mary weighed in as an Irish record, beating the current record of 42lb 12oz. This weight was however not verified and as Mary has evaded capture for a number of years the opportunity to weigh her in has not happened in some time. Mary still resides in the oaks lake and hopefully some time soon will be captured beating any Irish record.
